Environment

Stokab has had an environmental focus since our start in 1994. As of 2021, an environmental and climate plan has been developed with clear goals. There are activities linked to this. The plan is based on, among other things, the City of Stockholm's Environmental Program 2030 and Agenda 2030.

Impacts, risks, and opportunities (IRO)

Impacts

Stokab’s operations, which include the deployment and operation of fibre infrastructure as well as the management and development of the City’s communications network, have a climate impact that arises primarily in the supply chain. This impact arises from raw material extraction, manufacturing and
packaging of components and network equipment (such as plastics, electronics, metals and concrete), carbon emissions from transport and construction projects, and waste management associated with construction projects.

Risks

Specific risks include increased energy consumption and overreliance on virgin materials. In addition, improper waste management in connection with network deployment, network decommissioning and IT equipment may lead to resource loss, environmental impact and increased costs.

Opportunities

Opportunities include improved planning and material optimisation, reduced transport through digitalisation, increased circularity through the reuse of quality-assured components and equipment, and more efficient management of excavated material in line with the City of Stockholm’s environmental targets.

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Hållbarhetsikon 9,1

11•6 Reduce the adverse per capita environmental impact of cities

The continued roll-out of the fibre network creates conditions for environmentally friendly and climate-smart solutions within the city.

Hållbarhetsikon 9,1

12•2 Sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources Stokab

All materials used in construction projects must be carefully calculated to minimise waste.

12•4 Responsible management of chemicals and waste

All products used in Stokab’s network are assessed by Byggvarubedömningen (BVB). Chemical products are reported in the City of Stockholm’s tool, Chemsoft.
